How to prepare for your Bikini wax.

PRE-WAX EXFOLIATION

We recommend that you exfoliate the skin on your pubic region a day or two prior to your bikini waxing appointment. Thoroughly clean the area, keeping the skin moist but not greasy from heavy lotions or oils.

LET IT GROW

Hair should be 1/4″ to 1/2” long for effective waxing. For most people, this means waiting 2-4 weeks (minimum of 2) from the last time you shaved.

SUN EXPOSURE

We recommend that you avoid exposing the skin to extreme sunlight for 48 hours before and after your bikini wax. If you are getting a spray tan, we would recommend getting your tan 1-2 days after your wax. This will ensure your skin is hair-free and has had time to recover.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A WAX

Your skin may be sensitive following your bikini wax — and that’s totally normal! This could include:

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Bumps
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Stubble

Any irritation should subside within a few hours.

Prevent Ingrowns

Exfoliating 2-3 times per week can help prevent ingrown hairs post-wax. We also offer a variety of product that can help minimize ingrown hairs, including:

  • Scrubs
  • Brushes
  • Poufs
  • Oils
  • Serums

  • Standing water, such as pools, lakes, and oceans
  • Heavy lotions

Bikini waxing FAQ

The process of a bikini wax is pretty straightforward. Here’s how it’ll go:

  1. Once you’ve arrived at the studio, your Cerologist will show you to the room.
  2. They will then give you a cleansing body wipe and a privacy sheet. The body wipe is to clean your intimate area prior to waxing — especially helpful if you’re coming to the studio midday or after work.
  3. The Cerologist will then leave the room so that you can undress from the waist down, leaving on your underwear or using provided disposable underwear. If you’re worried about your Cerologist seeing you in all your hairy glory, don’t be. They’ve truly seen it all and think nothing of it. They’re experts and they do bikini waxing services every single day. DO NOT feel self-conscious. You are beautiful!
  4. Your Cerologist will knock on the door after several minutes and ask if you’re ready. They will then direct you through the entire waxing process and different positioning so that they can remove any and all unwanted hair.
  5. They will wax hair along the bikini line. Be sure to communicate to your Cerologist exactly how much hair you want removed. The entire of the bikini waxing process will take about 15 minutes.

The beauty of waxing is knowing the part of your body that you wax will be hair-free for a minimum of 1-2 weeks following your wax appointment. That said, waxing is a process, and the more consistently you do it the better the results.

Expect regrowth quicker after the first wax, but with consistent waxing month after month, you will start to see the hair stay away for longer periods of time. Waxing lasts much longer than shaving, as shaving only cuts hair at the surface, while waxing removes the hair from the root.

For more information, see our blog, How Long Does a Waxing Last? Here’s What You Need to Know.

We suggest hair be 1/4″ to 1/2” long for effective bikini waxing. Hair that’s longer than 1/2” (or about the length of a grain of rice) can make a bikini wax more complicated, as it’s prone to breakage when waxed off for first-timers. This means the follicle won’t be removed and your results won’t last as long. Long hair can also cover up other hairs during a wax, which requires repeated waxes of the same area.

Prices and services vary by location, so let’s find the Waxing the City location nearest you.

Of course! Waxing is for everyone. There’s a misconception that it isn’t safe to wax male genitals, but this isn’t true. Scroll up to see the type of waxing options we have for our clients with a penis.

The million-dollar question, “Does waxing hurt?” is nearly impossible to answer! Everyone has a different scale for pain tolerance, and what is painful for someone may not bother someone else.

However, at Waxing the City, both our wax and our process work together to offer you the most comfortable service possible. If you’re still worried about managing sensitivity, we recommend taking an ibuprofen or aspirin roughly 30 minutes before your appointment to help maximize your comfort.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before a bikini area waxing appointment:

  • Make sure to avoid heavy lotions or oils.
  • Don’t shave before a wax, as it can irritate the skin, and of course, it will leave the hair too short to wax properly.
  • In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your wax.
  • Avoid drinking a big cup of coffee before your next service as caffeine can increase your sensitivity levels.

You can absolutely get a bikini wax on your period — there is no health concern. We’ll ask that you wear a tampon during your service, but otherwise it will be business as usual. Women may want to think about scheduling their wax appointments during the first two weeks of their cycle, as it will help decrease sensitivity.

Absolutely. We will do everything we can to make our pregnant clients feel as comfortable as possible during their waxing service. While there are generally no health concerns, feel free to speak with your health professional ahead of time if that would make you feel more comfortable!

In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure on the skin for 48 hours before and after your wax.

This goes for sunless tanning, too. If you get a spray tan before your wax appointment, it will remove some of the color from your skin, leaving it splotchy and possibly irritated.

Wear whatever will make you comfortable during your wax. However, underwear with the least amount of coverage is recommended, as it’ll be easier for us to reach the pubic area of your body. We encourage you to leave your top-shelf underwear at home to avoid getting any wax on your favorite pair. We also provide complimentary disposable underwear if you’d prefer — just ask your Cerologist!

Our licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are not only waxing and beauty specialists — they are the ultimate professionals at their craft. To reflect their expertise, we created our own name: Cerologist. Looking for the definition of a Cerologist? Cerologist combines cera (Latin for wax) with ologist (to indicate their waxing authority and education).

Certain health medications, isotretinoin or tretinoin (aka retinoic acid) can thin your skin, causing potential for tearing during a bikini wax. Let your Cerologist know if you’re taking or applying any prescriptions. Your Cerologist will ask you to complete an intake form when you arrive for your appointment.

  • Bumps: Irritated skin may cause some bumps to appear, but they’ll likely go away on their own within hours or days. As part of your bikini wax aftercare, try post-bikini wax serum to help soothe the skin if needed. Just ask your Cerologist to point you in the right direction.
  • Redness: Skin redness can disappear anywhere between a few minutes to a few days.
  • Itching: Try not to scratch. Itching usually occurs in between appointments when hair starts to grow back, but exfoliation can help.
  • Stubble or ingrown hairs: Everyone’s hair grows in different cycles, so it’s possible that hair below the skin’s surface may sprout after your bikini wax. Sometimes, dry or brittle hair can break during a bikini wax service, so be sure to keep everything moisturized. To help prevent ingrown hairs (or further skin irritation), we recommend using our Post Wax Serum or ingrown hair exfoliating pads.
